The parish was originally known by the name of the township in which the church stands, 'Bodlenyn' but this name was superseded sometime after 1291 by that of its founder, St Elian. Reference is made to the village as the 'Ecclesia de Bodwelenyn' in the Lincoln Taxation of 1291. Today the village is know as Llanelian-yn-Rhôs
